The Probabilistic Turn in Semantics and Pragmatics

چکیده

This article provides an overview of graded and probabilistic approaches in semantics pragmatics. These share a common set core research goals: ( a) concern with phenomena that are best described as graded, including vast lexicon words whose meanings adapt flexibly to the contexts which they used, well reasoning under uncertainty about interlocutors, their goals, strategies; b) need show representations learnable, i.e., listener can learn semantic pragmatic from data; c) emphasis on empirical evaluation against experimental data or corpus at scale; d) scaling up full size lexicon. The methods used sometimes explicitly not. Previously, there were assumed be clear boundaries among frameworks, classifiers machine learning, distributional approaches, but these have been blurred. Frameworks pragmatics use all three these, combination, address four questions above.

Probabilistic Semantics and Pragmatics: Uncertainty in Language and Thought

Language is used to communicate ideas. Ideas are mental tools for coping with a complex and uncertain world. Thus human conceptual structures should be key to language meaning, and probability—the mathematics of uncertainty— should be indispensable for describing both language and thought. Indeed, probabilistic models are enormously useful in modeling human cognition (Tenenbaum et al., 2011) an...

The Semantics/Pragmatics Interface

We survey three domains – scalar implicatures, presupposition, and conventional implicatures – in which the division of labor between semantics and pragmatics has given rise to new empirical and formal insights in the last decade. In each case, there is a vibrant contemporary debate concerning the modular decomposition of rich arrays of data.

The Experimental Turn in Philosophical Pragmatics

Modern pragmatics has been defined as “philosophical” pragmatics, not only because its main representative authors, such as John Austin (1962) and Paul Grice (1989), were philosophers of ordinary language, but also because it has used linguistic and philosophical analysis as the key method to give an explanation of the communicative features of language. If we consider language in general as an...

Pragmatics and Semantics

ly specify a certain language L in order to characterize the speech habits of a community P by saying that they are using that language and conforming to conventions involving it. 6 The uses of linguistic forms on which their semantics depends, and which therefore constitute the pragmatic basis for their semantics, are their past uses: what an expression means at time t in a given community dep...

Lexical Semantics and Pragmatics

In this paper I discuss some general problems one is confronted with when trying to analyze the utterance of words within concrete conceptual and contextual settings and to go beyond the aspects of meaning typically investigated by a contrastive analysis of lexemes within the Katz-Fodor tradition of semantics. After emphasizing some important consequences of the traditional view, several phenom...
